Battling Crohn's Disease and Inspiring Others Through Malibu Moves
Morgan's story is one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of both personal and professional excellence, all while managing a life-altering chronic illness. Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 16, Morgan's journey with Crohn's disease began during a pivotal time in her life—right in the middle of lacrosse season, while being scouted by college coaches. Experiencing frequent bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, and exhaustion from anemia, she faced the reality of her diagnosis with the courage that would define her life.
"I share these details to stop the stigma around these symptoms and issues so that people seek care when these things happen to them," Morgan says, emphasizing the importance of awareness and early intervention.

Background & Personal Journey
At just 17, Morgan became the first pediatric patient to receive Infliximab for ulcerative colitis, a groundbreaking treatment at the time. Despite the challenges, she managed to play Division 1 lacrosse at Davidson College in North Carolina, flying back home to Philadelphia every six weeks for infusions. This relentless pursuit of her goals, even in the face of a chronic illness, set the tone for her future endeavors.
“I share these details to stop the stigma around these symptoms and issues so that people seek care when these things happen to them.”
Over the years, Morgan underwent several surgeries, including a total colectomy and IPAA surgery. "I had my entire colon removed, an ostomy bag for three months, and was later reconnected to pass stool normally using my J-pouch—you wouldn't know the difference looking at me," she explains. These experiences, compounded by the need for various medications and treatments, have shaped her into a resilient warrior, continually fighting for her health, career, and family.
A Career Driven by Compassion
Morgan's battle with Crohn's disease inspired her to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner, particularly at the Cedars-Sinai IBD Center, where she now provides care for patients facing similar challenges. Her personal experiences profoundly influence her approach to patient care, making her an empathetic and understanding practitioner.
"I started volunteering at a camp for kids with Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis while I was home from college," Morgan recalls. "I was working on a research project with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, measuring the quality of life of campers before and after camp. This experience changed my life, and I kept going back year after year." This passion for helping others led her to pursue an accelerated BSN/MSN program, eventually landing her a position at one of the top IBD centers in the country.
"Our team at Cedars is more accurately described as a family," she says. "Being surrounded by colleagues who understand the challenges of living with IBD makes a world of difference."
Facing Challenges Head-On
Morgan's journey has not been without its setbacks. She has had four surgeries, with the most recent one just a month ago. "This past surgery was really tough," she admits. "I had complications and ended up needing a second surgery, staying in the hospital longer than anyone anticipated." However, with the support of her care team, therapist, and family, she prepared herself mentally and physically for the surgery, focusing on lifting heavy, working on flexibility, and building stamina.
"I am still processing some very difficult experiences I had during that hospitalization," she reflects. "But now, I am working to leave that behind and focus on all the good things ahead, especially with my son and partner."
Morgan's recovery has been a slow but steady process. "I had to force myself to start slowly once I got home," she says. "I began with 10-minute flat treadmill walks, gradually increasing the duration and intensity. I also mix in Peloton bike workouts, yoga, and pelvic floor physical therapy." While the journey has been challenging, she views it as a reset, allowing her to be more aware of her running gait and muscle engagement.
The Role of Fitness in Healing
Running and fitness have played a significant role in Morgan's life, both before and after her diagnosis. "I've been into fitness since high school," she shares.
"Even when I decided to quit lacrosse in college, I remained committed to staying active, knowing how important it was for my physical and mental health."
Morgan didn't initially enjoy running but grew to love it after college. "Running was more of a punishment or means to an end for lacrosse games, but I came back to it on my own and found solace in hitting the road or treadmill with some good music," she explains.
The upcoming Malibu Moves 5K holds special significance for Morgan as part of her recovery journey. "I had been thinking about signing up for this race for quite some time," she says. "It aligned perfectly with my discharge from Cleveland Clinic and my return to my fitness routine and running goals."

Advocacy and Fundraising for a Cause
Morgan is also deeply committed to raising awareness and funds for Connecting to Cure Crohn's and Colitis, an organization founded by parents of patients she has cared for. "This organization means a lot to me," she says. "They have raised millions for research, support groups, and other programs, all with a strong volunteer base."
Morgan plans to engage her community in her fundraising efforts by sharing her journey and training progress on her Instagram. "I think it's going to be fun to not only share where people can donate to support but also my training efforts, which blend with my PT and recovery."

Overcoming Obstacles and Inspiring Others
Morgan's journey with Crohn's disease has been marked by numerous challenges, but she has always found a way to overcome them. "It is incredibly hard if you don't have the right medical team advocating for you," she says. "Always seek out second or third opinions if needed. I have been fortunate to have a great team, but I have also had to advocate for myself, especially recently when I wasn't on my home turf."
When asked what advice she would give to others facing similar struggles, Morgan emphasizes the importance of persistence and support. "Surround yourself with friends or family who can advocate for you if you can't," she advises. "And on difficult days, I find the strength to keep moving by focusing on what I can do, no matter how small."

Looking Ahead
Morgan's goals for the future include better stress management and continuing her advocacy work. "I want to incorporate mindfulness into my daily routine," she says. "I believe it will help me be more present for my son, partner, and patients."
As she looks forward to the Malibu Moves 5K, Morgan hopes to inspire others with her story. "If I can do this after being in a hospital bed for a month, anything is possible," she says. "My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and community support."
