A New Year’s Wish and Tips to Prioritize Movement & Self-Care
Dear Malibu Moves Family,
As we welcome a new year, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to this amazing community. Whether you participated in our inaugural IPS Malibu Moves Half Marathon, 10K, 5K & Kids Run presented by UCLA Health, cheered from the sidelines, or are planning to join us in 2025, your energy and passion for movement inspire me every day.
The holiday season brings a mix of joy and chaos. Between family gatherings, gift shopping, and year-end deadlines, it’s easy to forget to take time for ourselves. As the Race Director of Malibu Moves and someone who believes deeply in the power of movement, I want to share a few tips to help you incorporate self-care and activity into your routine.
These are practices I personally rely on, and I hope they’ll resonate with you as we stride into the new year together.

1. Embrace the Joy of Movement
Movement during the holidays doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming—it’s about finding what feels good for your body.
Morning Routines: I start my mornings with a quick 10-minute stretch or yoga flow. It’s a calming way to wake up my body and mind, setting a positive tone for the day.
Post-Meal Walks: One of my favorite traditions is taking a post-dinner walk with family or friends. It’s a wonderful way to connect and reflect while staying active.
Short Workouts: If you’re pressed for time, even a 15-minute jog or a brisk walk can do wonders for your energy levels and mood.
At Malibu Moves, we celebrate all forms of movement—whether you’re walking the 5K, running the 10K or the Half Marathon, or chasing your kids in the Kids Run, every step matters.
2. Gear Up for Colder Weather
Even in Malibu, the winter months can be brisk. Having the right gear ensures you can enjoy the stunning coastal views comfortably.
Base Layers: A moisture-wicking base layer keeps you dry and prevents the chill from setting in. Look for options made of materials like merino wool or synthetic blends.
Top Layers: Add a lightweight, insulated jacket or vest to trap heat while allowing freedom of movement.
Accessories: Don’t forget gloves, a beanie, or an earband to protect extremities, and invest in a good pair of thermal socks.
Invest in Shoes: A good pair of running shoes is essential for any type of movement, whether you’re hitting the pavement, jogging along the beach, or training for your next event. Specialty running stores can help you find the perfect fit based on your gait, stride, and needs, ensuring comfort and support for every step.
With the right gear, colder weather becomes an opportunity to explore and enjoy the beauty of outdoor movement.
3. Prioritize Self-Care
The holidays can feel overwhelming, so taking moments for yourself is essential. Here’s what works for me:
Unplug Daily: I try to spend at least an hour away from screens to reconnect with my thoughts or enjoy time with loved ones.
Hydrate and Nourish: Amid holiday indulgences, staying hydrated and eating balanced meals helps me feel my best. I always keep a water bottle handy as a simple reminder to drink more water.
Gratitude Journaling: Reflecting on the things I’m grateful for—like this wonderful Malibu Moves community—grounds me and brings a sense of peace.
Self-care isn’t about doing everything perfectly; it’s about doing what feels right for you in the moment.
4. Share the Journey
Movement and self-care can become even more meaningful when shared with others.
Start a Holiday Fitness Challenge: My family and I often set fun goals, like who can take the most steps in a day. It keeps us active and adds a playful element to the holidays.
Join a Group: Community runs or walks, like those along Zuma Beach, are a great way to stay motivated while connecting with others.
Virtual Support: If meeting in person isn’t possible, share your goals online with friends and cheer each other on.
At Malibu Moves, we see firsthand how powerful community support can be. Whether you’re running solo or with a group, you’re never truly alone.
5. Reflect and Set Intentions
The new year is a perfect time to reflect on the past and set goals for the future. Here’s how I approach it:
Celebrate Wins: Look back on your accomplishments, no matter how small. Maybe it’s signing up for your first 10K or simply showing up for yourself more consistently.
Set Realistic Goals: As you plan for 2025, think about what’s achievable and sustainable. If you’re aiming to run the Malibu Moves Half Marathon, start with small, consistent actions that build over time.
Keep It Positive: Instead of focusing on what you want to change, think about what you want to add—like more joy, connection, or time outdoors.
Looking Ahead: Malibu Moves 2025
As you set your intentions for the year, consider joining us for the next Malibu Moves Half Marathon, 10K, 5K & Kids Run. Unlike other events near Malibu, our courses are uniquely scenic, running entirely along Zuma Beach and the Pacific Coast Highway.
This event is about more than racing—it’s about celebrating movement, building community, and giving back. Proceeds from Malibu Moves support the Malibu Education Foundation, funding programs that benefit local students.
Whether you’re ready to tackle the Half Marathon, enjoy the camaraderie of the 10K or 5K, or share the joy with your little ones in the Kids Run, there’s a place for everyone at Malibu Moves. A New Year’s Wish
As we step into 2025, I wish you to find balance, joy, and connection in everything you do. Movement can be a powerful tool for self-care, but it’s also a way to connect—with nature, with others, and with yourself.
Thank you for being part of the Malibu Moves community. Together, we’re creating something truly special, and I can’t wait to see what this year holds for all of us.
Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!
Warmly,
Erica Segel
